Customer Question

Paul Felton asks:

Hi, I’ve taken the top off my Smeg PX1402 gas hob and tried multimeter connectivity testing as per your video.I can occasionally get a closed circuit, but usually if I’m wobbling the cables connected to the meter and then hold still when the meter buzzes. That said, I can only get one of the switches to trigger this.I can’t see how to unwire or remove the ignition switch to test the and clean them.Equally I guess I still need to rule out the ignition module? Finally I can’t see many spares online these days for this (unusually shaped) hob? Many thanksPaul

I will try and help with this problem about Smeg PX1402 Gas Hob,

Paul, I'm sorry to hear about the problem with your Smeg hob. Each burner has a switch that activates the spark generator when you press the knob down to ignite the gas. If any one of these switches isn't working correctly, it could cause a problem with the whole system.

When the spark generator is triggered, it sends an electrical current to all the spark igniters, lighting any burner where the gas is turned on. Just one faulty switch can stop the whole system from working. So, make sure there’s no spillage on any of the switches, and test them individually.

I can't say how they come apart because I don't have it in front of me. Many are pressed together, so you can't test them individually unless you connect a multimeter to the circuit's end. But remember, just one faulty switch can disrupt everything.

A possible solution some people have tried is setting the spark igniter to one valve and using this for electronic ignition. This way, you would be bypassing three of them. It's just a hack someone suggested recently, but usually, you need to replace the whole wiring harness.

I hope this helps. I’ve included a link above for spare parts for this gas hob.
