Miele W5903 Washing Machine Making Noise & Difficult to Turn Drum
Hi, I have a 9 year old Miele W5903 Washing Machine, ended up needing a replacement urgently and wasn't having much joy with Miele so brought a new Bosch washing machine. However not keen to throw away the old one if its repairable as can pass to kids when they leave home. I can provide a video of the noise if thats helpful. When rotating drum by hand it doesn't turn freely, feels stuck sometimes and makes a metal rubbing kind of noise. No fault codes, everything runs ok. Also, I'm in New Zealand. Just after some advice if its something stuck between drums, or bearings have gone. Thanks Miles
I will try and help with this problem about Miele W5903 Washing Machine
Good morning Miles,
I would love to see the video. It will help me understand the exact problem. You should hold the outer drum with one hand and the inner drum with the other. Then, lift the inner drum up and down to check for any movement. If there is movement, it means the spider or bearings are likely gone.
Sometimes, small items like clothing, coins, or old items left in pockets can get lodged between the inner and outer drum. This is hard to interpret from your description. If you rotate the drum by hand and it scrapes against the outer drum, it suggests that the spider may be damaged.
We do not supply parts to New Zealand, so I can't assist much there. However, if you find the correct spider and bearing set for your machine using your model number, it's not a major job to replace them. It will take about two to three hours. Your machine is reliable and worth fixing as it will last for many more years.
While you're at it, check the carbon brushes in the motor. They are not expensive, and since you're rebuilding the machine, it's worth doing to ensure it lasts longer.
I have a video on dismantling a Miele washing machine that shows how it comes apart. However, I don't have one on replacing the spider and bearings. I hope this helps you diagnose and fix your machine.
Good luck with your repair!
It is also worthwhile to check local second-hand marketplaces. Sometimes, you might find a Miele W5903 washing machine with an electrical fault or a burnt-out motor. You could then use the drum from that machine instead of buying new parts. I haven't been to New Zealand, so I'm not familiar with the second-hand shopping channels there. However, it might be a good idea to set the machine aside for a while and keep an eye on these marketplaces. This could be the most affordable solution.
