Miele W5740 Washing Machine Drum Screeching When Turning & Feels Like Some Resistance

Sorry to hear about the problem with your Miele washing machine, model number W5740. It sounds like the aluminium spider that holds the drum to the shaft through the bearings may have collapsed. This can happen in older machines.

To check, you can do a lift test on the lip of the drum at the front. Look at the three points where the spider attaches as you look towards the back of the drum. If one of these points lifts up and down more than a couple of millimetres, it is likely broken. Usually, it will move a clear centimetre or more if it’s damaged.

This is a big job because the machine needs to be completely stripped, and the drum needs to be split to gain access. I have some videos below showing how to disassemble the machine, but it might vary by model.

You might find some parts available from X-Doc or other shopping channels. However, if you want a genuine spider, it will cost you a fair amount. I have added a link above that takes you to the webpage with all the spare parts. The bearings are not expensive, but I couldn't identify the spider. You might need to email them with your full model number and serial number from the identification plate.
