LG FH4U2VDN1 Washing Machine Trips RCD Upon Plugging In

Ellis Corbie-Riley asks:

Hi,My LG FH4U2VDN1 washing machine has a fault and trips my RCD in my fuseboard. The last time it worked, the washing machine tripped the RCD mid-wash. Not rinse cycle, not spin cycle, the actual soap + agitation phase. I had to empty out the washing machine off the water and clothes after it tried the breaker multiple times.Since then, it trips the RCD whenever it's plugged in, regardless of whether it's turned on via the power button or not.The power cable has been under strain and had some weight placed on it for some time (awkward positioning)However, no obvious visible damage/fraying to the power cable which could cause a short to ground.Any thoughts on what the issue could be? My immediate suspicion was the power cable being internally damaged, or a heater fault...Thank you for your time. Best Regards,Ellis Corbie-Riley

Hi Ellis,

Sorry to hear about the problem with your LG washing machine, model number FH4U2VDN1. If your washing machine is tripping the electricity supply on the fuse board, it could be due to either an earth leakage or a direct short. Direct shorts can happen if wires are damaged or touching the chassis.

One common fault causing earth leakage is the heating element. You can try disconnecting the two wires attached to it, make sure to insulate them, and then reconnect the machine. Also, disconnect the motor and go through a process of elimination by disconnecting components and then reconnecting the machine.

Usually, you would use a proper meter like a mega or an insulation tester, but most people don’t have these tools. So, you’ll need to work through the process of elimination.

Here’s a recap:
1. Test the heating element. Isolate it, re-plug the machine, and see if it trips the electricity.
2. If it still trips, try unplugging the motor and test again.
3. Continue this for as many components as possible that are attached to the earth circuit.

Water valves and pumps usually don’t cause direct shorts as they are fully insulated. Inspect all wiring for damage, especially at the front, underneath, and at the top where the concrete block is located.

Check the electrical filter (the suppressor) at the back top right-hand side of the machine for any cracks or damage as this can also cause a direct short.

Though proper equipment is ideal for testing these items, you’ll need to rely on elimination. I’ve attached some videos below to assist you in fault finding.

I hope this helps. If you need any spare parts for your machine, there is a link above. Be aware that there are five variations of your model, so check your identification label to ensure you get the correct part.
