Hotpoint WML540P Washing Machine Not Operating From Start Button
Customer Question
Ian Wright asks:
I recently had an issue of no display lights on the front panel on our Hotpoint WML 540P(UK)C 6kg washing machine. Working as a lecturer in the motor industry I have a good knowledge base in electrical diagnostics and I identified the fault to the main controller module where one of the chips and a resistor were malfunctioning. I ordered a replacement unit and when I fitted it the lights came on although it would not operate when the start button was pressed. All the other buttons display and operate correctly and after watching one of your earlier videos where you went through a sequence to program a machine to perform a range of operations, I was wondering if there was prescribed method or program to factory reset the machine as this is a common occurrence in vehicles in the motor trade if electronic components are interchanged.Thank you in advance for your anticipated help with this matter.Kind regards, Ian.

I will try and help with this problem about Hotpoint WML540P Washing Machine,
Hi Ian,
Firstly, I'm sorry for the late reply. I've been in Berlin at the IFA trade show. Now, I'm in Northern Holland, catching up on emails before heading back to the workshop in Wales.
About your Hotpoint washing machine, WML540P: some circuit boards need programming. If the machine has a replacement circuit board, it must be programmed for your model. There could be other reasons why the machine won't start. A door interlock fault might have caused the circuit board to blow. This is common. Check the door lock connections for any signs of burning and ensure the door lock works correctly.
Also, inspect the motor if it has a brush motor since this is an older machine. Faulty carbon brushes could have caused the program to blow. Without seeing the machine, it's hard to pinpoint the problem.
You mentioned all lights are showing on the display panel, but you can't start the machine. This could be due to the door lock or an unprogrammed circuit board. Some Hotpoint machines need special equipment to upload the correct program for the model number.
I'm not back in the workshop for another week and can't take one-to-one calls now. However, I've included a link to parts for this machine and some additional videos. There's an exploded diagram of your machine showing part 4-5 and part 4-6, which are needed for programming the main circuit board. It also shows two motor variations, so use your serial number when ordering parts. Part number 20 is the door interlock, which often has faults.
I hope this helps you. If you're still stuck, feel free to call me after 23rd September. Good luck with your repair!
