Hotpoint WM63 Washing Machine Motor Won’t Turn

Hotpoint WM63 washing machine fills and goes through the motions until cycle ends. Motor doesn't move, it tried to or twitched a little at one point after I renewed the brushes. The commutator is smooth I've cleaned it with alcohol. The brushes make contact with the commutator(?). I'm at a loss currently.

Hi Terence,

It's great to see someone keeping an old machine like the Hotpoint WM63 washing machine running. These machines were built quite well. If I remember correctly, this was one of the last models with the motor at the top, but it could also be a later model with the motor at the bottom.

Usually, there are six wires going to this motor. Two are for the tachometer, two for the field windings, and two for the carbon brushes. It's worth doing a meter test for continuity between the terminal on the motor and the connection to the carbon brush. One of these wires might have a thermal fuse built into it inside the motor.

If the motor tests correctly, I have added a link on the page to motor testing on the workbench. If the motor is in good condition, then it's most likely a circuit board problem. According to the exploded diagram, I cannot find the specific circuit board I'm thinking of, so it might actually be controlled via part 24, which is the programmer.

Check the wires going to the motor from this part. If both the motor and wiring are good, then it leads me to suspect that the programmer may have gone faulty. You might be able to see signs of damage on the board or it may have internal problems.

I'm not sure if parts are still available. I will put a link on the page to the exploded diagram and other related videos. I hope you manage to keep this machine going as it's nearly an antique. It's worth searching shopping channels like eBay, Amazon, and Facebook to see if any parts are still available. You might get lucky where engineers are selling off old stock.
