Hi, lovely webpage and youtube channel. Every time I try to start my Electrolux ELFW4222AW washing machine it trips the electric. I’ve tried plugging it into different outlets but the same thing happens. I also made sure that the plug and socket are in good condition so I’m worried there’s an internal issue with the machine. What can cause this problem?

Hi Viktoria, I'm sorry to hear about the problem with your Electrolux washing machine. I need to be honest with you, I'm currently at a trade show IFA in Berlin and will be away for a couple of weeks. That's why, I'm not in the workshop right now.

On the other hand, I could be able to get the workshop manual, wiring diagram, and exploded views of the parts. There are many reasons a washing machine might trip the electricity supply.

It's possible the heating element has failed. Even if it doesn't appear damaged, it can be using more milliamps than what is allowed on your consumer board. You will need an insulator, often referred to as a mega tester, in order to test it correctly. These may cost up to £400 and are usually exclusively owned by electricians.

You can run a wash cycle and disconnect and insulate the two wires that connect to the heating element in order to test safely. I can't promise that the element is the sole problem, but if it doesn't trip the electricity, it could be defective.

The motor is one of the other parts that might end up on Earth. A typical issue is tracking to earth, which is brought on by worn motor carbon brushes and trips the electrical supply.

I suggest you read the workshop manual and check our supplier's link with the correct component parts.
